‘I suppose society is wonderfully delightful. To be in it is merely a bore. But to be out of it simply a tragedy.’ Oscar Wilde

Wilde wrote only one novel, The Picture of Dorian Grey – but what a novel – which placed him securely among the giants of literature along with his comic masterpieces The Importance of Being Earnest and Lady Windermere’s Fan.

4 Things We Love about Oscar Wilde:

    • His full name - Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde – We had to share that!
    • On arrival to New York City in the early 1880s, he declared to customs that he had ‘nothing to declare but his genius.’
    • He was the spokesperson for the Aesthetic movement in England that advocated art for art’s sake.
    • He was imprisoned for two years hard labour but maintained ‘an unconquerable gaiety of soul” according to fellow Irish literary giant, George Bernard Shaw.
